John Pocius has written to the parish,

“Thank you to everyone for prayers and support
and assistance.”

It was on the evening of our parish Tiger Game outing that we all learned Sheila had returned home from the hospital. It was Laura Ridella who suggested a list of volunteers be created to provide meals for the Pocius family as they spent their energies on Sheila’s recovery.

The response was overwhelming, and now there are volunteers providing dinners for the Pocius family Tuesdays and Thursdays through the end of September. The family is most grateful for this generosity, and we are grateful for the foresight of Laura who saw the need and acted upon it. Appreciation goes to those parishioners who stepped up without hesitation to lend a hand. God bless all of you!

POSITIONS AVAILABLE

Choir Members Wanted: Positions open to soprano, alto, tenor and bass. No others need apply.

Physical Qualifications: Must be able to carry light musical notes across the sanctuary. Must have sufficient vision to see the director.

Experience: No application will be accepted from persons who have not sung, hummed, or whistled in the bathtub or shower at some or any time.

Beginning Wage: Increased satisfaction and joy in the service to God.

Fringe Benefits: Social Security. We promise you the security of social fellowship with other choir members.

Bonus: Year-end Choir Member Picnic!

Hours: Sunday mornings from 9:15 to 11:15. There are occasional opportunities for overtime.

Retirement: Generally determined by printed notes getting too small; the hymnal too heavy; notes too high; sanctuary too hot or too cold; or the organist is unable to play the notes you sing!

Farewell Lusch Family!

Adieu, sayonara, ciao, auf-wiedersehen, coda, cheerio, arrivederci ~ they all say the same thing ~ good-bye!

So, it is with sad hearts that we, as a parish, say goodbye to our fellow parishioners, the Patrick Lusch Family. We wish them God’s blessings and God–speed as they look forward to their future in Washington, D.C.

We are grateful for the gifts that they have brought to our parish. Patrick’s leadership in the Mass Mob, his participation as a Member-at-Large and Parish Webmaster on the Parish Council, a Jazz Nite event committee member, and his ministry as a Lector at Mass. Their young family has brought joy and vigor to our liturgies as their family grew, and babies were baptized.

So, we bid them a fond adieu with words that are inadequate to let them know we will miss them, hope they will pray for St. Matthew Parish, and will return soon to be welcomed as visitors.

AN OPEN LETTER TO OUR ST. MATTHEW FAMILY
FROM PATRICK AND KIM LUSCH

My wife Kim and I wanted an opportunity to share the news of big changes that are currently afoot in our household.  Inside of a month’s time, our family will be relocating to Alexandria, Virginia. As many of you know, I work for the Federal Aviation Administration. I was recently offered a promotion, which after much prayer and discernment, is simply an opportunity we can’t pass up. I will be working in the Office of Accident Investigation as a Senior Air Accident Investigator, continuing my passion of working to keep our nation’s airspace the safest in the world.

Kim has accepted a new job as a first-grade teacher at the Basilica School of St. Mary, in the heart of Old Town Alexandria. In a curious twist of irony, she will leave St. Mary in Mt. Clemens, and move to St. Mary in Alexandria! Our oldest son Kylan will attend first grade at the Basilica School, and we flew him out there a few weeks ago to tour his new learning environment. The school is simply beautiful, and I know the kids will flourish there immersed in a Catholic education.

While we are excited for our new adventures, we are simultaneously sad and nervous. We know it’s a great opportunity for our family and an amazing place for our kids to grow up and learn about our country’s rich history, but it’s also a terribly sad thing to leave our family and friends in Michigan…especially our St. Matthew “home”. Aside from telling our parents and extended family, telling Fr. Novelly was one of the most heart-wrenching conversations yet.

Thirty-five years ago my parents brought me to St. Matthew for baptism, and similarly, we have brought our three children to be baptized here as well. For 35 years I’ve never felt more at home as when I walk through these doors. We’ve enjoyed amazingly beautiful times here, including our wedding in 2009, and we’ve grieved with the loss of many loved ones as we’ve laid them to rest from here. Quite simply, St. Matthew is interwoven throughout all our lives, for as long as we both can remember.

In some ways, we see this move as something that has been made possible by how our lives have been blessed and enriched during our time at St. Matthew. God has truly blessed us. Thank you for allowing me to sit on your parish council. Your council is comprised of some amazing people, and I know they will continue to do wonderful things for the parish. Thank you for the ways that you have loved us and welcomed us as family. Thank you for always encouraging us. We love each of you very much and are very sad to say goodbye. We humbly ask for your prayers that this transition is peaceful for our family, especially for Kylan, Kinsleigh, and Kamden. We will always continue to pray for our St. Matthew family and hold you in our hearts.

While parishioners will come and go, there is one who remains constant: Jesus Christ. Jesus has been here from the beginning and will be here with you for the rest of time. If, through the power of the Holy Spirit you allow Jesus to continue to guide you, the St. Matthew parish will continue to be filled with love, purpose, and mission.
